Reconstruction Help in the Delta Region
The media coverage about the unwillingness of the Myanmar government to accept foreign aid has
resulted in a bottleneck situation where, despite unanimous foreign support, only the absolute
bare minimum is getting into the devastated areas. This could result in the disaster being
forgotten, thus further endangering thousands more, as this catastrophe was just as severe and
destructive as the Tsunami that hit Thailand a few years back.
For this reason, Myanmar Development Aid (MDA) was concentrating its efforts, additionally to its
emergency relief activities, to help rebuild a strongly hit village and pursue its reconstruction with
financial help and with expertise.
The village of Kyet Pha Hmwe Zaung (KPHZ) in the
Pyapon district was heavily affected by Nargis. Both of its
schools were totally destroyed. After consultation with
the local authorities, village residents and with Uniteam
Marine Yangon (UMY), it was decided to rebuild the
middle-and-high school (6.-10. grade).
For the construction of the new middle-and-high-school
with a capacity of up to 1200 children, a new location was
chosen because the previous site was already too small.
The new school will comprise three buildings (3x 36m x
9m x 4m), with a total of 16 rooms, one of which will be
used by the teaching staff and administration. In addition,
two buildings, each having six girls’ and boys’ lavatories,
are planned. Construction began on 27 June 2008 and is
now in full swing.
