© 2008 - Myanmar Development Aid e.V. Download Accountability Report 2010 as PDF I.Introduction In its third year of operation, the nonprofit organization Myanmar Development Aid e.V. (MDA), with headquarters in Hamburg, continued to successfully implement relief measures in Myanmar. The construction of the school building in Thandwe was completed in cooperation with its on-site partner, the ship management company UNITEAM MARINE (Yangon) LIMITED. Through the introduction of an orphan sponsorship program (godparent/godchild program), MDA has increased its commitment to the orphanage "Myitar Yaung Chi", located in Thangliyn. As in previous years, MDA can assure its donors that 100% of their contributions were invested in ongoing projects for the underprivileged, without the deduction of administrative salaries and overhead. II. Relief Projects 1. The new wing of the "Taung Kyaw Nga" Thandwe Governmental Middle School was inaugurated in October 2010 after four months of construction. It is located in the administrative capital of Thandwe in the state of Rahkine. The construction was partially financed by MDA with donations amounting to USD 41.421,05 (EUR 33.868,40). The two-story building has six classrooms for 360 students with each classroom accommodating the instruction of up to 60 children, aged 5 to 13. The new wing was urgently needed because the middle school was no longer able to accommodate all of its 900 students adequately. 2. Located in the village of Thanlyin in the northeast of Yangon, the orphanage Myitar Yaung Chi (Ray of Love) has been in operation for one and a half years. At the beginning of 2011, an additional ten children were accommodated, so that by the end of 2011 it housed 62 boys, aged 5 to 16. To enhance the boys future career chances, MDA bought computers and printers in 2010 valued at USD 3.749,50 (EUR 2.796,88). English and computer courses are not offered in the state run school which the children are attending; therefore these courses were funded by MDA in the amount of USD 3.669,62 (EUR 2.802,43). In addition, the children attended art classes at the orphanage during their school holidays. 3. MDA also paid for the school uniforms for the new school term, which began in June 2010. The value of these garments was USD 1.791,23 (EUR 1.424,44). 4. In 2010, in addition to helping cover the orphanage’s operational costs (staff salaries, food, medicine, maintenance), MDA developed a sponsorship program by which a person or family can become a godparent by agreeing to sponsor one or more boys with a monthly donation of 15 to 25 Euros. The godparent/godchild program provides amenities which the boys would otherwise be required to purchase on their own. By the end of 2010, 51 boys had godparents. The sponsorship program was conceived to ensure that all of the boys benefit equally, regardless of the amount donated by individual sponsors or whether a direct sponsor was found for a child. 5.MDA acquired some much longed for toys (e.g., Playmobil container ship and police station) purchased through auction on e-bay. These toys, valued at EUR 407,44, were sent to the orphanage for Christmas. III. Financial Statements Donations 1. In 2010 MDA received donations totaling EUR 24.809,95. Of this amount, MDA received EUR 21.454,95 in regular donations, EUR 1.100,00 in membership fees and child sponsorship fees amounting to EUR 2.255,00. Expenditures 1.In 2010 MDA spent EUR 44.072,20. These expenses were met through donations of EUR 41.299,59 (explanations see above II. Relief Projects) and a provision for the sponsored children amounting to EUR 2.255,00. General administrative expenses (e.g., notary fees) totaled EUR 517,61. Currency differences 1. A total exchange rate gain of EUR 828,26 was realized through the difference between exchange gains of EUR 3.585,26 and exchange losses of EUR 2.757,00. Result 1. A profit of EUR 24.485,89 was realized in 2010 and will be carried over to 2011 to finance future projects. The difference between 2010 income and expenditures ([EUR 24. 809,95 + 828,26] - EUR 44.072,20 = EUR -18.433,99) was covered with profit carried over from 2009. Receivables and payables 1. At the end of 2010, MDA held assets totaling EUR 27.814,44. These assets consisted of cash and bank deposits of EUR 27.319,24 and unpaid sponsorship dues and an unsettled advance of EUR 495.20. The sponsorships were paid in January 2011; the advance will be deducted from the next project. 2. At the end of 2010, MDA recorded EUR 3.328,55 in liabilities, which included EUR 1.025,00 in prepaid sponsorship dues. The remaining EUR 2.303,55 is a liability to the children from sponsorship dues. This amount corresponds to USD 2.959,36 and shall be spent to benefit all children in the orphanage Myitar Yaung Chi as soon as possible. IV. Outlook Land was purchased with the help of a private donor in the immediate vicinity of the orphanage Myitar Yaung Chi. An orphanage for girls will be built there in a privately financed initiative. In the future, MDA intends to wbecome active in this new project while continuing to collect donations to cover the running costs and to pay for extra English and computer classes at the orphanage Myitar Yaung Chi.
